Buying a Used Car in Kerala: The Complete Checklist

A used car can be a great deal or an expensive mistake. The difference is doing the boring checks before you pay, not after. Here is the full checklist.

Verify the documents first

• Registration Certificate (RC) — name, chassis and engine numbers must match the car
• Valid insurance and a clear no-claim history
• Pollution (PUC) certificate
• Service history and past bills, if available
• Confirm there is no outstanding loan/hypothecation on the RC (or get the NOC)

Inspect the car cold

Always see the car with a cold engine in daylight. A warm engine can hide a hard start. Look for mismatched paint (a sign of accident repair), uneven panel gaps, rust under the doors and boot, and tyre wear that is even across all four.

The test drive checklist

• Cold start — should fire without hesitation or smoke
• Brakes — no pulling to one side, no vibration
• Steering — straight and centred, no play
• Gearbox — smooth shifts, no grinding (drive an automatic in all modes)
• AC cooling, all electricals, power windows and central locking

Get an independent inspection

For anything above a few lakh, pay a trusted mechanic or a car-inspection service to check it before you buy. A ₹1,500 inspection can save you a ₹50,000 repair. Many workshops in Kerala offer pre-purchase inspection.

Complete the RC transfer

The deal is not done until ownership legally transfers at the RTO. Until then, you are liable for anything the car does. Do not delay the transfer, and keep copies of everything.
