Starting a Small Business in Kerala: Licenses and Registrations You Need

Kerala is one of India's most enterprise-friendly states on paper, but the paperwork still trips up first-time founders. Here is the practical list of what most small businesses actually need, and the order to do it in.

1. Decide your structure first

Sole proprietorship is the simplest and cheapest to start — fine for a shop, small service, or freelancer. A partnership or LLP suits two or more owners who want shared liability. 2. Udyam (MSME) registration

This is free, online, and takes minutes with an Aadhaar and PAN. It formally registers you as a micro, small or medium enterprise and unlocks priority-sector loans, subsidies, and protection under the MSME payment rules. There is no reason to skip it.

3. GST registration

You must register for GST if your turnover crosses the threshold (₹40 lakh for goods, ₹20 lakh for services in most cases), or if you sell across state lines or on e-commerce platforms. 4. Local body trade licence
